History

The first jail in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, was built in 1775. Constructed from logs, the jail was located near the corner of Trade and Tryon Streets in downtown Charlotte. The jail was a simple one-room structure with a dirt floor. It was used to hold prisoners awaiting trial or being transported to other jails or prisons.

19th Century Expansion

In 1836, a larger and more secure jail was built on East Fourth Street. The new jail was a two-story brick building with four cell blocks. It was designed to hold up to 100 prisoners.

In 1872, the jail was enlarged again to accommodate the growing population of Mecklenburg County. The addition added two more cell blocks and increased the jail's capacity to 200 prisoners.

20th Century Challenges

The early 20th century was a time of great change for the Mecklenburg County Jail. The jail's population continued to grow, overcrowding became a major problem, and there were concerns about the health and safety of the prisoners.

In 1923, the jail was temporarily closed due to overcrowding. A new jail was built on North Church Street in 1924. The new jail was a modern facility with 400 cells.
